Retirement Living Study

What’s happening

Future Proof considers all of the major growth challenges impacting the sub-region and is currently looking at how we best plan for the land and infrastructure required for retirement villages.

As part of our planning, we asked Waikato residents aged 45 years and older about what’s important to them when it comes to retirement and what their retirement living arrangements are / or what they expect them to be when they reach retirement age.

Retirement Living Market Analysis

Future Proof Partners have commissioned Formative Consultants to assess the demand for retirement village housing within the Future Proof Area (Waikato District, Matamata-Piako District, Waipā District and Hamilton City).

The final report is now available. Please note that this is a technical report only and has not yet been formally adopted by Future Proof and is one input into a wider study which is due for completion by the end of this year.

Final Retirement Living Study Report

The study found that demand for retirement living options is growing rapidly, requiring 10,000-12,000 additional retirement units and care beds across the Future Proof sub-region by 2048.

The report has a number of recommendations such as the need for spatial planning to lead future identification of integrated growth areas for retirement living within or adjacent to existing urban centres (ensuring there is alignment of community and health infrastructure) and development of non-regulatory ‘Age in Place’ urban design and universally accessible housing design guidance requirements for all residential developments.
